Grade 7 to 12 Sciences

Mr. Bakx grew up and received most of his academic and professional training in the Netherlands. He holds Master's degrees in chemical engineering (cum laude) and education, both from Delft University of Technology. After a brief career in research, he found his passion for education. Since 2000, Mr.Bakx has taught courses in Science and Math to elementary, high-school and adult students with a wide variety of backgrounds. In 2004 he moved to Canada, where he rediscovered his childhood love for nature. Connecting young people to their natural environment is a major objective of his teaching practice.

Mr. Bakx aims to facilitate meaningful learning experiences that relate to students' daily lives. He routinely covers current events, especially issues concerning sustainable development and the environment. He would like school to reflect life, and to prepare for life in the present and future. This means reconnecting subject areas, discussing challenges we face as local and global communities, and allowing students to explore solutions. Mr. Bakx' ongoing projects include habitat restoration, composting and organic gardening, and energy conservation.

Mr. Bakx lives in Naramata with his wife and two children.
