Africa Presentations

2008-04-24 18:12:02

I realized today that I haven't told parents about the Africa projects the students have nearly completed.

Each student has chosen an aid organization, and is creating a display board to draw awareness to the respective causes. Students will make a speech at an assembly that requests action from the student body. Students are also each using Microsoft Word letter templates (IT integration) to write persuasive letters to various audiences (including teachers, the Board of Directors, and parents).

Display boards will be on display during the Open House, and students are encouraged to attend and answer questions about their charities. Students are expected to plan one course of action for the school to pursue in order to help the cause they have chosen.

Making a Pie Chart

2008-01-22 13:45:28

In case you forget the steps for making a pie chart:

1. Convert the percent of each category to a decimal (17.3% to .173)

2. Multiply the decimal by 360 to find the degrees

3. Use a protractor to measure and drawthe slice or wedge

CIA World Factbook

2008-01-22 13:35:53

We've been using information from the online CIA World Factbook. Each student has a photocopy of their country's section, but in case they need the electronic version - https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/

Homework tonight is to complete one item from each student's individual "hit-list."

Demographics

2008-01-21 15:29:18

Today we compared infant mortality rates between countries in the Horn of Africa and Canada, Brazil, Greece, and China. We found that the number of deaths per 1000 births was much higher in eastern African countries than in Canada.

We also looked briefly at the age structures in African countries. Some students wondered why there was so many people in the 0-14 years category, and so few in the 65 range.

We'll be making pie charts next class.

No new homework, keep workinig on past assignments!

Geography

2008-01-11 13:38:01

1. Show the major cities, and geographical landforms

2. Show population density
