Hey S.D.

We hope you feel better soon!

Fort Langley

2008-05-14 20:05:45

The timing for our trip is perfect. We have been discussing Canadian Confederation and the Fraser Gold Rush in class, and we'll be there next week!!!

Check out this website if you want to learn more about Fort Langley! http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/bc/langley/index_e.asp

Gold Rush Resources

Exam Review

2008-05-05 22:13:56

In this message I will post resources for preparing for the Social Studies final exam.

Here is the study guide

I will add good websites for review as well:

Metis: http://www.umanitoba.ca/canadian_wartime/grade6/module2/

Confederation: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/2/2/h2-1250-e.html

Excellent site for learning more about Confederation!

2008-05-05 22:01:51

I HIGHLY recommend that you check out this site: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/2/2/index-e.html I am using the glossary to make a jeopardy game for our class.

The best way to find information on this site is to just click TAKE THE TOUR on the left part of the page, and that will take you through Confederation.

Fort Langley Permission Slip

2008-05-02 16:49:17

Here is the permission slip for our trip. Please return it asap. Make cheques out to Glenfir School. Contact me with any questions.

Wish me luck!

This week I sent off an application to join 70 teachers in an intensive professional development programme aimed at providing teachers with a deepr understanding of how Canada's parliamentary democracy works. The programme, called the Teachers Institute of Parliamentary Democracy, takes place over five days in November.

If accepted, I am sure I would bring back a lot of fantastic ideas and insight for teaching our Social Studies programme at Glenfir.

I have never applied for this programme before, and there were a lot of questions in the application that I did not have a lot of time to research. Alas, if I am not accepted this time I'll be applying again for next year with a bit more experience on my side.

Metis Information

Excellent for review!

Mapping

2008-04-22 16:10:51

Please finish plotting the last couple lakes/rivers on the map of Canada. This shouldn't take too long. I'd suggest googling the names on the list. Alternatively, you can use a map like the one we used in class today: http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/reference/anniversary_maps/political

George Vancouver

Some interesting reading about George Vancouver:

Your map is due next class.

Study Guide for test

Each student was given a hard copy of this outline. Here it is again if you need it.

Monday

2008-02-25 15:38:34

Today students worked on their word processing skills by writing up a summary of our trip to Kelowna. The summary was four parts: where/when, what I did, what I learned, my reflections of the trip.

I have a bank of photos from the day that students will each put into their document before printing.

Parent input wanted for potential Fort Langley trip

2008-02-21 20:14:13

I thought we could try using a message board to discuss ideas for this trip: http://www.quicktopic.com/41/H/RQhvC9EYhBQ

I have never used this site before, and I think it might work - but who knows. It shouldn't require you to log in or give your email... Please sign your message so I know who is posting!

Kelowna Museum Trip!

Excited? I am!

Don't forget to wear your formals so we all look sharp!

See you tomorrow.

Parent Volunteer(s) needed

2008-02-19 17:37:05

Following up on the letter I sent home today, I am looking for some help to make the Fort Langley "dream" a reality. I am first waiting to find out what the parent opinions are towards the trip. If I receive ample interest, I'll hopefully find a volunteer who can help put it together. I have already contacted both the Fort and the campground, so the wheels are in motion. Then we'd need to figure out what dates work for this, sort out costs, and then find out what equipment the students need to take.

Mrs. Johnson and Ryder have already agreed to come along if we do it!

Check out these links:

http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/bc/langley/edu/index_e.asp

Imagine doing this!!! http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/bc/langley/edu/edu1h_e.asp

What a learning opportunity that would be! I know the students would have a better idea of what the fur trade was like!

Plus - I think it would be a lot of fun to camp down there. Imagine the stories around the campfire... http://www.fortcamping.com/thankyou.aspx

Kelowna Field Trip this Friday

2008-02-18 15:42:53

We'll be going to the Kelowna Museum on Friday to take part in two activities: Fur Trade, and Gold Rush.

You can download the permission slip from Mrs. Bonten's portal if you misplaced the one that came home in the backpack.

Getting it all together

2008-02-18 14:58:40

Today we spent a class working on corrections, organizing binders, and sorting out key misconceptions in the work we have been covering.

Students binders should be organized as follows:

Canada's History, Champlain's Quebec, Journal 1-Abitation, Quebec Established, Journal 2-Filles Du Roi, Royal Colony, Hudson's Bay Company, Building an Empire, Groseilliers and Radisson, Journal 3-Voyageur, Comparing HBC to NWC worksheet, Treaty of Utrecht sheet, Seven Years War Reading.

I expect my initials or a sticker to be on all pages. If there is not one, it means corrections still need to be done.

Hudson Bay Company Trading Post

2008-02-16 10:37:45

Here is the activity we did in class that the students were really excited to try on their own. I hope it works. I'll only have this online for a while because I am not sure if the license to dispaly it also includes displaying it online. I tried to link it to the website, but that didn't seem to work.

Time Travel #2

2008-01-28 15:28:56

You've jumped back to the year1663. Intendant Jean Talon has convinced King Louis XIV to send 800 filles du roi to Canada for the 700 unmarried men there to marry. The goal is to increase the population in the settlement. However, how do the young men and women feel about being given 15 days to find a partner? We'll continue working on this journal in class. This is not homework.

Learn more about the filles du roi here: http://www.civilization.ca/vmnf/popul/filles/s-fil-en.htm

2008-01-11 16:49:19

Ok- I can see it will take a bit longer than expected to edit the commercials. We'll continue for a class next week, but I encourage students to come on Tuesday after school to get some extra help!
